The Legacy

What does legacy look like in our industry?

The Legacy Clay Classic exists to explore, celebrate, and inspire legacy in the Greater Cincinnati AEC community, honoring those whose work, character, and commitment leave a lasting mark on the people, places, and profession around them.

Each year, we ask a simple question: what does legacy look like in our industry? The answer is never the same. It shows up in businesses passed from one generation to the next, in the irreplaceable absence of someone whose relationships defined a community, in the quiet mentorship that shaped careers, and in the work that outlasts the person who built it. The Legacy Clay Classic is where we find those answers, celebrate them, and carry them forward.

Legacy is not one thing

It takes the form of continuity, a business received and carried forward. It takes the form of impact, a person whose presence shaped everything around them. Craft, mentorship, generosity, character. We celebrate all of it.

Every honoree adds to the definition

Each year's honoree expands what legacy means in this community. Future honorees will show us things we haven't yet imagined. That open-endedness is not a gap, it is the point.

Community is the context

The AEC industry in Greater Cincinnati is built on trust, partnership, and long relationships. Legacy doesn't happen in isolation, it happens in the presence of people who witness, carry, and are shaped by it.

Generosity is the output

Every dollar raised above event costs goes directly to a cause chosen by the honoree, an organization that maximizes benefit to those it serves. Legacy inspires generosity. That is the cycle we are building.

Our Story

From “Don’t Shoot the Engineers” to the Legacy Clay Classic

A day on the range became a tradition. A tradition became a mission. A mission became a way of honoring the people who build Greater Cincinnati.

Through 2024

A Day on the Range

Founded by Jeff Barrow, CEO of Civil Solutions Associates, the event began as an annual gathering for clients and friends: a day where the people who build Cincinnati could step away from the project site and connect. Its founding sponsors were there from the start, and so was its spirit, less about business and more about community.

2025

In Memory of Steve Arnold

The event was renamed the Legacy Clay Classic in tribute to Steve Arnold, Business Development Manager at Bray Construction, who passed away unexpectedly. Steve was a connector, a champion for others, and a tireless ambassador for the profession. His absence made visible the full size of what he had built, and planted the question that became the event’s purpose.

2026 & Beyond

A New Tradition

Beginning in 2026, the Legacy Clay Classic honors one individual or family each year who has made a generational commitment to the AEC industry in Greater Cincinnati: someone who received something from the generation before them and chose to carry it forward. The honoree selects a charitable organization to receive the net proceeds.
